Assignment #4: Diagrams

Due: Tuesday, 28 October 2003

Hey team – thanks for your hard work on the Photoshop/storyboard assignment this past week.  From what I hear, everyone in the company is very pleased with your performance and feels that we made excellent intern hiring decisions.

For this week, we have been asked to create some sample web-site site maps. Specifically, Sheila Kelley (our chief information officer) contacted me for support concerning her website development initiative.  As one part of this initiative, Ms. Kelley would like to improve how our website reveals its information structure to the user.  She is considering adding an interactive site map to achieve this goal, and is first looking for ideas for how to design the site map (she will look into making it interactive at a later date).  I suggested that we could prepare some sample site map designs in order to stimulate ideas and support her decision making.

Thus, I would like each of you to develop a site map to share with Ms. Kelley.

Requirements:

You should do this assignment using Visio professional.

  1. Breadth:  Create a site map that represents three levels of the site’s hierarchical structure.  The home page represents level 1 (the top level).

  1. Special Pages: The following information should be included in the site map:

·        Websites have some pages that are linked from different places within the site – this should be accurately depicted on your site map.

·        Websites typically have resources (e.g., search capabilities, contact email) available on every page of the site. You should develop an appropriate way to represent this on your site map.

  1. Branding: The diagram should contain elements that clearly links it to the organization (e.g., similar colors, similar fonts, similar graphics elements).

  1. Software:  Aim to use a range of Visio features when creating your map, such as various shapes/icons, line formats, backgrounds, imported graphics, and fonts.

Submission:

This assignment is due in E-Portfolio by the start of class on Monday, 4/21/03.  You will submit one Visio file, a key features annotation, a design rationale, and a learning reflection.
