Assignment #06: Web Design

Due: Tuesday, 11 November 2003

Things are looking good.  You guys have been doing such a great job that the department thinks you should work on a revision to the Technical Communication department website. The current site is old and everyone is ready for a change.

Although the department is interested in a comprehensive new site, they have agreed that we should put together some simple designs for now (and will move on to larger sized sites later).  This simple site is to have an overview of the TC department (as the main level-1 page) and the backgrounds of each team member (as individual level-2 pages).  Additionally, the resource page you created last week should be included as a level-2 page.  Figure 1 shows this site structure.

As with other assignments, I would like to see some alternative solutions from each of you before we settle on the final design.  To make comparisons between solutions easier, I would like the main page text to be the same across your solutions.  I look forward to seeing them!

Requirements:

Your assignment is to create a website using Dreamweaver.   The design and implementation of the site should address the following requirements:

  1. Team requirements: The team should create shared material for the main page.

-         Overview:  Short text that explains the activities of the TC department

-         Diagram:  A diagram that supports the overview

-         Navigation to Team Member Pages:  Text that provides a short introduction to the team and text that will become the links to each team member

  1. Individual requirements:  Each team member should use Dreamweaver to create a working two page prototype of the website consisting of

-         Main Page: The main page with the shared material, links to the team member pages, and a link to the TC resources page you already created (and is already available online).

-         Personal Page: Their own team member page (of your own design).

Note:  Since you will only submit two pages, main page links to other team member pages will necessarily not work.

  1. Additional requirements:  The design of the site should have a look/feel that is clearly influenced by the main company site.  This can be through choice of background, of colors, of images, and/or fonts.  We do not need to look exactly like our parent site.  However, we need to look integrated into the company.

Tips:

-         There is a wealth of information on the web concerning HTML.  The University of Washington has provided some useful materials/links at http://www.washington.edu/computing/web/publishing/author.html.

-         As a student, you can publish web documents on a University of Washington server.  To do this, follow the instructions located at: http://students.washington.edu/

Submission:

This assignment is due in E-Portfolio on Tuesday, 11/11/03 (at the time class would start if Tuesday were not a holiday).  Each student will submit one URL and the annotations indicated in E-portfolio.
